In the quiet corridors of Rwanda’s Southern Province, a shadowy game of cat and mouse unfolds, where minerals turn into cash behind veiled transactions. The spotlight is on Kigali, where the ramifications of illicit financial flows are felt the strongest.

Meet African Hills Fair Mining Ltd, a company embroiled in a scandal worth Rwf47million. Their ploy? Smuggling copper, cobalt, coltan, and gold under the radar, using forged documents to dodge taxes. The consequences of their actions are far-reaching, impacting the economic stability and development of Rwanda.

Chief Superintendent Hubert Gashagaza, Southern Region Police Spokesperson, paints a grim picture. “Illegal mining isn’t just an economic threat. It endangers lives. Miners without gear, unaware of site stability, it’s a disaster waiting to happen,” Gashagaza explains. The human cost is palpable, with unsafe mining practices putting lives at risk. Residents are urged to report suspicious activities to prevent tragedies and combat illegal mineral businesses.

In Kamonyi District, Jean Paul Mugiraneza, the District Executive Administrator, underscores local efforts to combat these illicit activities. “We’re ramping up monitoring and enforcement. Our aim is clear: protect the environment and the community’s economic interests,” Mugiraneza states. The district has intensified its efforts to ensure that mining activities are conducted legally and transparently, safeguarding both the environment and the livelihoods of its people.

The Rwanda Mining Board is working tirelessly, aligning with global standards to curtail these shady dealings. This includes implementing the Exchange of Information on Request (EOIR) and Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) standards. The goal is not just compliance but fostering a culture of integrity and transparency that attracts global investors.

The narrative of illicit finance in Rwanda’s mining sector is more than just numbers, it’s a tale of resilience, reform, and relentless pursuit of justice. As Rwanda pushes for a fairer and more prosperous future, the efforts of the Rwanda Mining Board, National Police, and Kamonyi District highlight the collective determination to eradicate illegal practices and ensure a level playing field for all.

The saga continues as Rwanda takes bold steps toward a transparent and accountable mining sector, paving the way for sustainable economic growth and development.
