Rather, there are many possible causes of depression, including faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability and stressful life events.
Marcella Abunahman Pereira, a Mexican Medical Doctor specialized in clinical cardiology says that the root causes of depression include family history, having other psychiatric disorder, being submitted to chronic stress. Having chronic anxiety and hormonal dysfunction, going through grief and loss, being overweight, having a sedentary lifestyle and unregulated diet, as well as having addictions like cigarettes, alcohol and illicit drugs.

According to Dr. Sarangan, the cause of depression may be due to various external factors such as stress, childhood abuse or relationship issues. Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism maybe also cause depression due to hormonal imbalance.
He says that treatment can be given by drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), Atypical antidepressants and psychotherapy. SSRIs usually prevent the reuptake of serotonin because serotonin is what the brain requires to maintain a euphoric state of mind, hence they help with depressing.
