Family history might be a root cause of depression, a review by doctors

Medical experts propose some reasons that might be the root causes of depression, among others family history, childhood abuse or relationship issues and being submitted to chronic stress.

Research suggests that depression is not simply a chemical imbalance. According to Nancy Anoruo, a medical doctor from Harvard medical school, it doesn’t spring from simply having too much or too little of certain brain chemicals. Rather, there are many possible causes of depression, including faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability and stressful life events.

Marcella Abunahman Pereira, a Mexican Medical Doctor specialized in clinical cardiology says that the root causes of depression include family history, having other psychiatric disorder, being submitted to chronic stress. Having chronic anxiety and hormonal dysfunction, going through grief and loss, being overweight, having a sedentary lifestyle and unregulated diet, as well as having addictions like cigarettes, alcohol and illicit drugs.

Israel B Dos Santos, Master of Public Health from Brazil, says that medications and psychotherapy are effective for most people with depression. Your primary care doctor or psychiatrist can prescribe medications to relieve symptoms, however, many people with depression also benefit from seeing a psychiatrist, psychologist or other mental health professional.

Sanju Sarangan, a Doctor of Medicine from India says that depression is a disorder that affect the mental health of a person. The patient is usually very sad, depressed, uninterested in anything and lacks the motivation to make life work.

According to Dr. Sarangan, the cause of depression may be due to various external factors such as stress, childhood abuse or relationship issues. Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism maybe also cause depression due to hormonal imbalance.

He says that treatment can be given by drugs such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), Atypical antidepressants and psychotherapy. SSRIs usually prevent the reuptake of serotonin because serotonin is what the brain requires to maintain a euphoric state of mind, hence they help with depressing.
