Covid-19; Vaccination services were available but parents were worried in Nyagatare

During the covid-19 period, especially during the ‘stay at home’ period, those with children who needed vaccines in Nyagatare say that vaccination services were available, but that as the parents of young children they were so much worried .

Mukandayisaba Donatille, a mother from Rwempasha sector in Nyagatare district, who gave birth in December 2019, says that she asked those who got health services and they told her that vaccinations were available without any problem; that’s when she got to take her child to be vaccinated.

“We just went to the hospital and they told us that covid-19 is around, so we had to get our children vaccinated and go straight home so that others can access the service too.” Mukandayisaba goes on to say that even though they were many but they had to give some distance between each other; after vaccination, every mother had to take her child and immediately return at home.

Some vaccines were introduced at home

In Rwempasha sector, a mother named Bikorimana Joella says that they went to Nyagatare for the first vaccine, but since then, health care officers would visit them in their village, that’s how their concerns have been reduced.

Mukandayisenga Devotha, a mother from Nyagatare sector, also said that health care officers came to find them in their villages, which was a great solution to their concerns; “The way we used to go to the hospital and sit in large numbers, that’s no longer the case, in village people are just few to wait for that service, the health services are getting better because they are trying to do it quickly so that the number of people don’t increase,” she said.

The local leaders find the work reduced

Nyagatare District vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs Juliet Murekatete says that vaccination services as well as other medical services have not stopped during covid-19; for some cases, they even sent health care officers to reach on patients and help them from their villages.

Not only the vaccination but also the other patients, even those who had to take medication regularly; which made the work so much easy, reduced the anxiety for those who had it and reduced the risk of covid-19 infection.
