Nyange, they are still uncertain about MPs election process

A short time from the elections of Rwandan MPs (members of parliament), ahead to happen early September this year, people of Nyange sector in Ngororero district, are still uncertain about the process. Some say that they will be choosing among pictures and names of candidates on vote paper, others say that they will participate in every round of elections.

MPs elections are scheduled from September 2 to 4, 2018; inside the country and outside through Rwandan diaspora. MPs will be elected some by all Rwandans and others by specific groups. Still some voters are not yet aware to the process that they will be using to vote.

Marceline Tugirumurera is a young woman in Nyange sector, Ngororero district; she said “we heard that there will be elections of leaders in September, we will vote for them on 2nd and 4th.” Fortunate Mukamana said “the MPs that we will vote for, there will be their photos and their names written under their photos, we will then stamp in the case beside their names.” Marie Goretti Mukashema will stamp in the case in front of the candidate’s picture.

Others are still not aware to who will vote for whom; Vestine Mukamana said that for youth MPs, only those in youth committees at village and cell’s level will vote for them. Marie Jeanne uwamahoro said “every MP will campaign and got elected from a certain district, and each sector will have a candidate.” 

The administration still have work to do

Mrs Gaudence Mukasano is the Executive secretary of Nyange sector, said that they still have to sensitize their people. In every community meeting, group gatherings that happen time to time, sport of women groups, they will use all available opportunity to educate their people about MPs elections happening shortly.

As it is planned, the whole election process consists of voting 80 MPs in 4 different categories. Open vote for 53 MPs from different political parties legally working on Rwandan soil and private candidates. Close Voting of 24 MPs representing women, 2 MPs representing youth and 1 MP represents people with disabilities.

MPs for particular categories are voted as following; 24 MPs representing women will be elected by Executive committees of National women council from national level to the village level, together with advisory committees’ members on district and sector’s level. 2 MPs representing youth are elected by Executive committees of national youth council at national and district levels. 1 MP representing people with disabilities will be elected by executive committees of National council of people with disabilities at national, provincial, district level together with chairpersons of National council of people with disabilities on sector level.

On September 2nd, 2018 scheduled vote by people living in Rwandan diaspora, and vote of 1 MP representing people with disabilities. On September 3rd, 2018 scheduled an open vote of 53 MPs from different political parties legally working on Rwandan soil and private candidates. And on September 4th, 2018 scheduled vote of 24 MPs representing women and 2 MPs representing youth.

The vote paper will have only political parties’ logos on them, voters will only vote for political parties that will place their people in seat according to their allowed list of candidates. Only private candidates will have their pictures put on vote paper.
