Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria, in the Balkans. It is located in the west of the country, at the foot of the Vitosha mountain range. Its monuments bear witness to its more than 2,000 years of history, including the Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet occupations. Boyana’s medieval church is decorated with frescoes dating from the 13th century. Built by the Romans in the 4th century, the Rotunda Church of St. George features medieval and Ottoman decorations dating back to the 10th century.
