Some parents from Gatsibo district, whose daughters got pregnant before the age of 18, blame it on their irresponsibility; about 775 girls got impregnated only in two years and some mothers feel responsible for this big number.
Gaudence Mukashyaka from Murambi sector says that conflicts in the family forbidden her daughter to approach them because she was always afraid of talking with them.
“I noticed the change of behavior for our daughter, I wanted to talk about it with my husband but he never wanted to solve our family’s problems together, we all didn’t care then she got pregnant.” Said Mukashyaka.
Claudine Uwimbabazi is from Kabarore sector, Gatsibo district, her daughter dropped out from high school after giving birth; she affirms that their daughter would never have fallen into boys traps if she took time to talk with her about sex, and blame her beliefs.
“My beliefs prevented me from talking with my daughter about sex; I would have explained to her that she might get pregnant if she had unprotected sex, I blame myself for the problems she is facing now.” She said.
Apart from daughters’ early pregnancies, some parents also blame themselves for after pregnancy consequences that their daughters faced.
“My daughter gave birth at 17, instead of taking care of her we traumatized her, and then she left school; we should have helped her to accept what happened to her as her parents.” Mukashyaka added.
Francois Gatsinzi, the director of Kabarore health center advises parents to dare and talk with their children about sex. “What we ask the parents is to take time and teach their children about sex. Otherwise bad men will trick them with wrong information and impregnate them that way.” He said.
Gatsibo district ranks second in Rwanda after Nyagatare district in early pregnancies. The research on teens pregnancy problem conducted in 2020 by Empower Rwanda, a women-led local non-governmental organization), indicated that the majority of cases was because of little knowledge on reproductive health, and the fear of parents to talk about sex.
