Some women from Nyanza district fault their husbands for lack of guarantees, which block them from getting bank loans to expand their businesses.
Delphine Uwamariya, a tailor in Nyanza town complains that her husband can’t allow her to use their properties as guarantee to get bank loan.
“I should have approached the bank for loan and buy new tairoling machines, or increase the number of employees, but my husband cannot allow me to guarantee ‘his land’ to the bank, he says to be afraid that if I fail the land risk to be sold away. I can’t force him in fear of conflicts at our home.” She said.
Not only are the husbands, even some women are afraid of losing their properties after failing to pay the bank loan, it’s still difficult for them to think about the bank loan while doing a small business.
“It’s really worrisome to see your property auctioned, we wish we would as women have source of funds other than the bank, so that step by step we will be able to grow and work with the banks, otherwise we will continue to depend on our husbands.” Said Seraphine Niyirora from Rwabicuma Sector, Nyanza district.
Patrick Kajyambere, the vice mayor in charge of Economic Development in Nyanza district reminds women that they have equal rights on properties as their husbands, and advises them to join various existing non-government organizations (NGOs) aiming at empowering women in Nyanza District.
